Pond Inlet, NU

A “Jewel of the North” on northern Baffin Island, Pond Inlet (Mittimatalik) is a stunning fjord-side Inuit community known for big mountains, sea-ice wildlife, and culture.

About the Community
Pond Inlet, called Mittimatalik in Inuktitut, is located on the northeastern tip of Baffin Island on Eclipse Sound, facing the dramatic peaks of Bylot Island across the water. The hamlet sits within the Arctic Cordillera landscape and is celebrated for its spectacular scenery and rich marine environment.

History
Inuit have lived in this region for millennia. The English name comes from explorer John Ross, who in 1818 named the inlet after astronomer John Pond. A Hudson’s Bay Company trading post opened on August 29, 1921, anchoring the modern settlement and trade hub for the High Arctic.
