TULUGAK CO-OP
Qikiqtarjuaq, NU
A small coastal hamlet on Broughton Island just north of the Arctic Circle, Qikiqtarjuaq (“Qik”) is known for icebergs, wildlife, and a deep connection to Auyuittuq National Park.
About the Community
Qikiqtarjuaq, meaning “big island” in Inuktitut, is located off the east coast of Baffin Island on Broughton Island in Nunavut’s Qikiqtaaluk Region. It’s often called the “Iceberg Capital of Nunavut” because large icebergs regularly drift past its shores. The community is also the northern gateway to Auyuittuq National Park, making it a hub for Arctic travel and outdoor adventure.
History
The surrounding coast has long been a whaling area, and a whaling station operated nearby at Kivitoo in the early 1900s. The community was officially renamed from Broughton Island to Qikiqtarjuaq in 1998.
