MITIQ CO-OP

Sanikiluaq, NU

On remote Flaherty Island, Sanikiluaq thrives as a tight-knit Inuit community grounded in the rhythm of Hudson Bay.

About the Community
Sanikiluaq is an Inuit community on Flaherty Island in Hudson Bay, part of the Belcher Islands archipelago in Nunavut’s Qikiqtaaluk Region. Though it’s within Nunavut, it sits
geographically closer to the coasts of Ontario and Quebec than to many other Nunavut communities. The surrounding waters and islands shape daily life, travel, and harvesting for the Sanikiluarmiut “people of the islands.”

History
The hamlet developed in the early 1970s to replace a nearby settlement known as South Camp. It later became an official hamlet in 1976, growing into the main hub of the Belcher Islands.

What the Co-op Provides
Mitiq Co-op supports everyday island life by providing core essentials, groceries, household goods, and community services, while helping sustain local employment and steady access to supplies in a remote setting.
