Chesterfield Inlet, NU

A windswept Hudson Bay hamlet with centuries of stories, Chesterfield Inlet (Igluligaarjuk) is Nunavut’s oldest established community.

About the Community
Chesterfield Inlet, Igluligaarjuk in Inuktitut, lies on the western shore of Hudson Bay in Nunavut’s Kivalliq Region, about 100 km north of Rankin Inlet.  Its Inuktitut name means “place with few houses” or “place with a few Thule houses,” reflecting ancient summer camps in the area.

History
Inuit have lived and traveled through this inlet for centuries, and by the 1700s it became one of the first places in the region to see regular European contact. Through the 1800s
and early 1900s it grew into a key Hudson’s Bay Company supply centre, and later a major
mission and policing site for the eastern Arctic.
