NAUJAT CO-OP
Naujaat, NU
A vibrant Arctic Circle hamlet on Hudson Bay, Naujaat is known for its seagull cliffs, rich Inuit arts, and strong land-and-sea traditions.
About the Community
Naujaat (formerly Repulse Bay) sits right on the Arctic Circle at the north end of Roes Welcome Sound on Hudson Bay in Nunavut’s Kivalliq Region. Its Inuktitut name means “seagulls’ nesting place,” inspired by nearby cliffs where thousands of seagulls return each June. The tundra coastline and sea ice shape travel, harvesting, and everyday life.
History
Europeans first reached the area in the 1740s, and Naujaat later became a major whaling stop by the late 1800s. A Hudson’s Bay Company trading post opened in 1911, followed by a Revillon Frères post in 1923 and a Roman Catholic mission in 1932. After community support for restoring the traditional name, Repulse Bay officially became Naujaat on July 2, 2015.
What the Co-op Provides
Naujaat’s Co-op supports daily life by providing essential groceries, household supplies, and practical northern needs, helping maintain reliable access to necessities and local employment.
