KISSARVIK CO-OP

Rankin Inlet, NU

A lively Hudson Bay hub, Rankin Inlet (Kangiqliniq) is the Kivalliq Region’s main centre for travel, services, and Inuit arts.

About the Community
Rankin Inlet, Kangiqliniq in Inuktitut, meaning “deep inlet/bay”, sits on the west coast of Hudson Bay on the Kudlulik Peninsula. It’s the largest community in mainland Nunavut and the regional hub for Kivalliq, with dramatic coastlines, rocky islands, and tundra lakes shaping the landscape.

History
Inuit have lived in this area since the time of the Thule ancestors. Modern Rankin Inlet grew around the North Rankin Nickel Mine, which operated from 1957–1962 and was one of the first Arctic mines to employ Inuit workers, drawing families from across the region into a permanent settlement.

What the Co-op Provides
